The place of education in the growth of any nation cannot be over emphasized as it plays a pivotal role in the development of any nation. What then is education?. Education can be said to be facts, skills and ideas that have been learned, either formally or informally. Many countries of the world today especially the developed ones are where they are as a result of the level of education acquired which is being put into practice especially in the science world. Countries like United States of America, Britain and China are regarded as world powers as a result of education which the citizens acquired and appropriately put into use. In these countries, education is valued and highly appreciated.Unfortunately in Nigeria, the reverse is the case as education has been relegated to the background. Little or no value is placed on it as everything has been politicised. Nigeria is where she is today as a result of less importance placed on education because no nation will ever experience growth if she fails to educate her citizens. Even the educated ones are not place at the right position as this can be seen in the area of employment where capable and qualified graduates are ignored and quacks are employed into vital offices and sometimes are even made the head in some cases just because they have all the connection. How can a country grow when some of those piloting the affairs are half baked?. It is high time Nigeria makes a U-turn and make education a top priority or possibly declare a state of emergency in the sector in order to secure the future of the generation yet unborn. Being a catalyst in national growth, the government should ensure that the educational sector is well and adequately funded with qualified teachers employed and these teachers should also be adequately remunerated. School facilities should be provided as well to aid teaching and learning. Some people should, especially those in the northern parts of the country should be sensitized on the importance of education to individuals and the nation at large. Finally, for Nigeria to witness a dramatic change in terms of growth in all ramifications, education must be given utmost priority as this forms the basis for every sector of the economy which work together to bring about national growth.By: EZEKIEL NDA AKPAMI.
